    SAVE THE DATE!

For the first time since the pandemic, we're once again holding the SHMA annual membership meeting and elections (and generally fun gathering in a beautiful location!) in person at the Hudson Valley Writers' Center at the Philipse Manor Train Station. Learn what your board has accomplished in the past year and hear from Peter Strom, arborist for the Village of Sleepy Hollow. Vote for board members (you must be a members to attend and vote) and catch up with your neighbors over all the main food groups: empanadas, beer, wine, signature cocktail, and cupcakes!

Three candidates are running for three seats, including newcomer (but old timer) Susan Brennan. Bios are below. Although uncontested, elections must be held with a quorum present, as per our by-laws.

    Candidate Bios

Jay Schulz is a native of Wisconsin, but moved to Sleepy Hollow Manor 24 years ago, and never regrets it because he loves this neighborhood.  Jay has been on the SHMA board for the past 13 years and has served as SHMA President for the past 5 years.

Jay has 2 daughters - one recently graduated from Binghamton, and one is a Sophomore at Northeastern.  Jay’s wife Laurie owns her own coaching business and has been able to help by facilitating Sleepy Hollow Manor virtual events.

Jay is an Industrial Engineer by degree and spent much of his 34-year career in Engineering Management roles at Kraft Foods and has experience in financial management as well.  Jay currently owns an Engineering consulting business, which gives him flexibility to serve on the SHMA board and help make Sleepy Hollow Manor a wonderful place to live.

Susan Brennan moved to Sleepy Hollow Manor in 1999 with her husband, Matthew, and their two children, now 23 and 26 years old.  Recently she stepped back from a 30+ year career in publishing with the hope of giving back more to our community.  In the past she has enjoyed participating in a variety of ways, as a Cub Scout den leader, a Sunday school teacher, and, for the past 10 years, an English tutor.  She is currently a board member for Literacy Volunteers of the Tarrytowns, specifically managing their library of books/ tutoring materials and helping to lead orientation sessions for new tutors.  She has participated in village-organized clean-ups and invasive species removal at Teatown Preserve and has volunteered for SHMA’s July 4th and Halloween celebrations.

With Susan on the board, we can also tap the expertise of her husbandMatt, who served on the Sleepy Hollow Planning Board for years. Susan and Matt agree that Sleepy Hollow Manor has been a wonderful place to raise their family, and they hope to contribute to a bright future.

Daphne Uviller has lived in the Manor with her husband (conservation ecologist Sacha Spector), two kids (now 15 and 18), and dog (Agent Poppyseed) since 2016. She has joyfully served on the SHMA board since 2017, and in the role of secretary since 2020.

Daphne has published four books, three at Penguin Random House, with a fifth teed up. She is an avid participant in and champion of the Horsemen PTA. Through the PTA, she co-launched the non-profit Community Wardrobe, which finds new homes for good clothes, free to neighbors who need them, in a dignified, boutique setting, on North Washington Street in Sleepy Hollow.

A third-generation Greenwich Villager, Daphne finds Sleepy Hollow to be the first place outside of NYC that she is happy to call home. She is endlessly grateful to have found this enchanting neighborhood full of caring, lively people, has truly loved working with her fellow SHMA board members, and hopes to be given the privilege of serving another term.

ANNUAL EVENTS

Annual Meeting/Election of the Board of Directors

This is an informative annual event where we gather with our friends, neighbors, and local officials to focus on issues affecting Sleepy Hollow Manor. We invite a guest speaker (recent years have featured the Mayor of Sleepy Hollow, the Superintendant of Schools, and the Director of Historic Hudson Valley) and provide updates on membership, finances, and key initiatives for the coming year.

The SHM Halloween Parade and Party

This is the signature event for our neighborhood. Where better to celebrate Halloween than the place where The Legend of Sleepy Hollow began? The event begins with a costumed parade down Hemlock Avenue with the Headless Horseman. The party is held at a property in the manor. This is a wonderful opportunity for neighbors of all ages to get together and have fun.

Fourth of July Parade and Picnic

This event is jointly sponsored by the Sleepy Hollow Manor Association (SHMA) and Philipse Manor Improvement Association (PMIA). The parade and marching band begins at Bellwood and Highland Avenues and proceeds to Peabody Field. Enjoy food, refreshments, music and a grand ole time with friends and family. There are games for the young and young-at-heart including, tug of war, three-legged races and the ever-popular egg toss. Prizes are awarded for the Best Decorated Fourth of July Cake and Best Decorated Bike contests. Join us for a great time and a salute to classic Americana!

Candidates’ Night

SHMA co-sponsors Candidates’ Night with the Philipse Manor Improvement Association (PMIA).  This annual event, usually in the form of a debate, provides an opportunity to meet the candidates for Village office, ask questions and hear their views on important issues affecting our community.
